The Quran – The Final Revelation to Mankind

The Qur'an - The Final Revelation to Mankind

What is the Qur’an?

The Word of God

The Qur’an is the literal word of God, The Almighty (Allah in Arabic), revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the Angel Gabriel.

“The revelation of The Book is from Allah, the Mighty, the Wise.” Qur’an 39:1

Guidance for Mankind

The Qur’an is “a guidance for mankind… and the distinction (between right and wrong).”Qur’an 2:185 It provides direction to help mankind judge between right and wrong, without which, man would surely be in loss.

The Final Revelation

The Qur’an is the last scripture revealed by Almighty Allah (God), confirming what little truth remains in parts of previous scriptures and refuting and correcting fabrications and additions which have crept into current day versions of such scriptures.

O you who have been given the Scripture! Believe in what We have revealed confirming what is (already) with you…”Qur’an 4:47

How was the Qur’an Revealed?

The Qur’an was revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him) and exists only in the language in which it was revealed – Arabic. However, the translation of the meaning of the Qur’an is available in many languages.

The Qur’an was not sent down as a complete book in one revelation; rather, the revelation spanned over a period of 23 years.

For this reason, it is essential to know in what circumstances the verses were revealed, in order to have a proper understanding of the Qur’an; otherwise, its teachings could be misunderstood.

How do I know that it is from God?

Preservation

The Qur’an is the only religious sacred text that has been in circulation for a lengthy period, and yet remains as pure as the day it was revealed. Nothing has been added, removed or modified from it, since its revelation over 1400 years ago.

“We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will certainly guard it (from corruption).”Qur’an 15:09

Not only has the Qur’an been preserved in written form, but also in the hearts of men, children and women. Today, millions of people have memorised the Qur’an from cover to cover.

Scientific Miracles

The Qur’an does not contradict modern science but rather, supports it. One of the most remarkable aspects about the Qur’an is that it contains many verses which accurately describe natural phenomenon in various fields such as embryology, meteorology, astronomy, geology and oceanography. Scientists have found its descriptions incredibly accurate for a book dating back to the 7th century.

We shall show them Our Signs in the Universe and within their own selves, until it becomes clear to them that this is the Truth.”Qur’an 41:53

In fact, many of the scientific miracles mentioned in the Qur’an have been discovered only recently, through the modern advancement of technological equipment. Consider the following:

  • The Qur’an gives a detailed description of the development of the human embryo. These details were unknown to the scientific community until recent times.
  • The Qur’an states that the astronomical objects (stars, planets, moons etc…) were all formed from clouds of dust. Previously unknown, this fact has now become an undisputed principle of modern cosmology.
  • Modern science has discovered the existence of barriers that allow two seas to meet yet maintain their own temperature, density and salinity.

These signs of God were clearly stated in the Qur’an more than 1400 years ago.

Uniqueness

Ever since its revelation, no person has been able to produce a single chapter like that of the Qur’an in its beauty, eloquence, splendour, wisdom, prophecies, and other perfect attributes.

And if you are in doubt as to that which We have revealed to Our servant, then produce a chapter like it and call on your witnesses besides Allah if you are truthful.”Qur’an 2:23

The people that rejected Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) failed this challenge, eventhough they were extremely eloquent in the language of the Qur’an. This challenge remains unanswered to this very day.

No Contradictions

When people write, they are bound to make mistakes such as spelling and grammar, contradictory statements, incorrect facts, omission of information, and other various errors.

Had it been from other than Allah, they would surely, have found in it (the Qur’an) many contradictions.”Qur’an 4:82

The Qur’an has no contradictions whatsoever – be it in scientific explanations of the water cycle, embryology, geology and cosmology; historical facts and events; or prophecies.

Couldn’t Muhammad have authored it?

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was known in history to be illiterate; he could not read nor write. He was not educated in any field that could account for neither the scientific and historical accuracy, nor the literary beauty of this magnificent Book. The precision of historical recounts of previous peoples and civilisations mentioned in the Qur’an is also too great to be authored by any man.

And this Qur’an is not such as could ever be produced by other than Allah.”Qur’an 10:37

Purpose of Revelation

To Believe in One True God

And your god is One God. There is no god but He, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”Qur’an 2:163

The most important topic mentioned throughout the Qur’an is the belief in the One, True God. God informs us that He has no partner, no son, no equal, and that none has the right to be worshipped except Him alone. Nothing is comparable to God and none of His creation resembles Him. The Qur’an also rejects the notion of attributing human qualities and limitations to God.

To Reject All False Gods

And worship Allah and associate none with Him.”Qur’an 4:36

Since Allah alone is the only One worthy of worship, false deities and false gods must be rejected. The Qur’an also rejects the notion of attributing divine qualities to anyone or anything other than Allah.

To Narrate the Stories from the Past

The Qur’an contains many narratives with beneficial lessons, including the true stories of previous Prophets such as, Adam, Noah, Abraham, Jesus and Moses. Of these stories, Allah says,

Indeed in their stories, there is a lesson for men of understanding.”Qur’an 12:111

To Remind us of the Day of Judgement

This Noble Book reminds us that everyone will taste death and will be held accountable for all their actions and sayings:

We shall set up scales of justice for the Day of Judgment, so that not a soul will be dealt with unjustly in the least…”Qur’an 21:47

To Fulfil the Intended Way of Life

Importantly, the Qur’an teaches that the purpose of life is to worship God alone, and live one’s life according to the way of life prescribed by Him. In Islam, worship is a comprehensive term that includes all actions and sayings (whether private or public) that Allah loves and is pleased with. Therefore, by doing what Allah commands, a Muslim is worshipping God and fulfilling his purpose in life. The following are examples of worship from the Qur’an:

To pray:

O you who believe! Bow down and prostrate yourselves and worship your Lord, that you may succeed.” Qur’an 22:77

To give charity:
…And spend, it is better for your souls; and whoever is saved from the greediness of his soul, these it is that are the successful.”Qur’an 64:16

To be honest:

Cover not Truth with falsehood, nor conceal the Truth when you know (what it is).” Qur’an 2:42

To be modest:

Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty.” Qur’an 24:30-31

To be thankful:

And Allah has brought you forth from the wombs of your mothers– you did not know anything– and He gave you hearing and sight and hearts that you may give thanks.” Qur’an 16:78

To be just:

O you who believe! Stand firmly for justice, as witnesses to God, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor…” Qur’an 4:135

To be patient:

And be patient, for indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.” Qur’an 11:115

To do good:

Allah has promised to those who believe and do good deeds (that) they shall have forgiveness and a mighty reward.” Qur’an 5:9

Conclusion

In summary, the Qur’an teaches mankind how to worship the One True God, hence fulfilling their true purpose in life, and attaining success in both this world and the next.

Verily, We have sent down to you (O Muhammad) the Book for mankind in truth. So whosoever accepts the guidance, it is only for his own self; and whosoever goes astray, he goes astray only for his own loss.” Qur’an 39:41

Don’t you owe it to yourself to at least read this Noble Book?

QuranTafaseer

The Word TAFSIR is an arabic word تفسير which is derived from the root ‘fassara’ . Someone who writes tafsir is a ‘mufassir…”. IBN KATHIR – Famous Mufassir (commentator of Quran) مفسر . Well known and respected for his keen memory and a highly regarded scholar of tafsir (commentary) – Born 1302 AD.

Memorized entire Quran, word-for-word along and memorized huge number of sayings and teachings (hadeeth) of the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, along with sayings and commentary about Quran from Muhammad’s companions, may Allah be pleased with them. The Tafsir of Ibn Kathir is of the most respected and accepted explanations for the Quran and is the most widely used explanations in Arabic used today. The difficulty of translating Quran to English is quite another problem and not one to be taken lightly nor is it for the average translators to decide what is meant by the words of Almighty God.

While we agree it is impossible to bring the exact meaning of everything from Quran to English, it is our intention to bring about a better understanding for non-Arab speakers at least a basic understanding of the meaning of the Quran for the English speaking readers.

This site presents the work of scholarly experts of Arabic, English, hadeeth and tafsir, together with the Guidance of Almighty God – the Explanation of God’s Words in simple English.

Quranic Arabic Grammar Course

The Qur’an is the most beautiful gift humanity has ever received. Yet for so many, its beauty remains hidden as translations leave readers with unanswered questions and academic explanations make it seem overly complicated.

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala choose Arabic as the language of Al Qur’an for the guidance of mankind. So learning Arabic is important to understand the messages of Al Qur’an directly, compared to reading from a translation.

Quran with Tajweed

What is Tajweed?

The word “tajweed” means to improve, make better.

Tajweed of the Holy Qur’an is the knowledge and application of the rules of recitation so the reading of the Qur’an is as the Prophet Mohammed peace and blesings be upon him, recited.

This site explains some of the principles of tajweed and focuses on the problems that non-Arabs have in reciting the Qur’an properly.

‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘As (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet  said, “The one who was devoted to the the Qur’an will be told on the Day of Resurrection: ‘Recite and ascend (in ranks) as you used to recite when you were in the world. Your rank will be at the last Ayah you recite.”‘

HOW CAN YOU LEARN TAJWEED?

Tajweed and its application can only be learned with a qualified teacher.

The rules themselves can be studied independently, but their correct application can only be done by listening to, reciting to, and being corrected by, a qualified teacher of the Qur’an.

DO ALL ARABS KNOW HOW TO RECITE THE QUR’AN WITH PROPER TAJWEED?

Unfortunately many do not know proper tajweed.  In the days of the Prophet, peace and blessing upon him, there was no need for the study of tajweed because they talked with what is now known as tajweed; in other words, it was natural for them.  Now, over 14 centuries later, colloquial Arabic has changed radically from the classical Arabic with which the Qur’an was revealed, and Arabs have to study tajweed, just in the same way that non-Arabs do.

I WANT TO LEARN TO RECITE THE QUR’AN WITH PROPER TAJWEED, BUT DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START.

The first step is finding a qualified Qur’an teacher who will listen to you and point out your mistakes, and help you practice fixing them.  You will need to learn the Arabic letters and vowels too.

WHAT IF THERE AREN’T ANY QUALIFIED TEACHERS WHERE I LIVE?

Then your task is going to be a little harder, but certainly not impossible.  You need to work with tapes of good reciters, for example, Sheikh Abdullah Basfar, or Sheikh Mohammed Hosary.  There are sets available on the Internet and in Islamic stores that are called “mu’alm”.  In these sets, the reciter reads a phrase, and then there is a blank space on the tape, allowing the student to repeat what the reciter has just read.

You will need to work on the pronunciation of letters by getting a description of the articulation points and practice placing your tongue, lips, or finding the place in your throat where the letter is articulated from, and compare it to the letter when recited by the Sheikh.

Quran learning for beginners

How To Teach Quran To Kids

Lap of the mother is the first school of the child. Being Muslim parents, as our children grow up, we feel a very worry about how to teach Quran to kids. Just as we are worried about their worldly education, we send them to school, set up tuitions for them, in the same manner, we must be highly concerned about teaching Quran to kids. Obviously, parents especially mothers are responsible for personal grooming and teachings of a child, so this responsibility is primarily your duty. Feeling the weight of responsibility on our shoulders, we come across many questions regarding teaching Quran to kids. For example, how to start teaching your child Quran, what is the right age to start teaching Quran, how would the startup be taken, which method of Quran learning to choose. Where your child would go to the mosque, a tutor would come home to teach Quran, you would learn Quran or some online Quran learning?

Let’s begin from the very starting point, the very first question arises ” when to start or what is the right age to teach your child Quran and by what age they have finished”. A definite answer to that question is, there is no clear cut age boundary to start with and to finish. It is thought that age of 4-5 years is ideal for starting Quran learning, but some mothers keep on reciting while pregnant and breastfeeding with hope this will impact on their children. You can begin at an age even less than four years, depending upon abilities and interests of your child. My younger brother had his surah Fatiha memorized by age less than three though he wasn’t able to even recognize alphabets. Keep in mind, every child has its pace of learning, do not compare them with others ( your cousin, neighbor had finished Quran at the age of 7, and you still haven’t being nine years old). It doesn’t mean that you give them a free hand to keep on delaying their daily sessions, but the point is, such attitude can demotivate your child.

In the following text, we would present you some of the tips for Quran to kids. These little points would help you a lot in ways to teach  Quran to children.

  1. Set yourself as a role model or an example, in front of the child , to follow you. Recite Quran daily, and make sure your kids are around you when you are reciting the holy book.
  2. Recite Quran in loud and catching tone, this would make them attracted towards what you are reading.
  3. Try to make the start of the day of your kid “ recitation of Quran”. Develop a habit of reciting Quran after Fajr.so that when your child opens his/ her eyes in the morning, the very first sound entering his ears is of Quran.
  4. Tell them stories of Quran. Your bedtime story can be any one of described in Quran. And do give them the reference of the story as Quran. Urge them to look up into Quran themselves.Keep on telling them about reward of Quran recitation eg.
  5. Keep on telling them about reward of Quran recitation eg.it makes Allah happy, Prophet (s.a.w) said that its best of learning, etc.

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “The best of you are those who learn the Qur’aan and teach it. ~ Bukhari Vol 6 – 61:545

Quran: A Miracle to last till the End!

The Methodology

The Glorious Quran is the pure word of God. There is not a single word therein that is not divine. Divine verses therefore, have not been mingled with the history of the Arabs or the events that occurred during the period its revelation.

The Book has been handed down to our age in its complete and original form since the time of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him  (p) . From the time the Book began to be revealed, the Prophet (p) had dictated its text to the scribes. The written text was then read out to Prophet (p), who, having satisfied himself that the scribe had committed no error of recording, would put the manuscript in safe custody.

The Prophet (p) used to instruct the scribe about the sequence in which a revealed message was to be placed in a particular Surah (chapter). In this manner, the Prophet (p) continued to arrange the text of the Quran in systematic order till the end of the chain of revelations.

Again, it was ordained from the beginning of Islam that a recitation of the Glorious Quran must be an integral part of worship. Hence the illustrious Companions would commit the Divine verses to memory as soon as they were revealed. Many of them learned the whole text and a far larger number had memorized different portions of it.

Method of preservation of the Quran during the Prophet’s time

Besides, those of the Companions who were literate used to keep a written record of several portions of the Glorious Quran. In this manner, the text of the Quran had been preserved in four different ways during the lifetime of the Holy Prophet (p):

a) The Holy Prophet (p) had the whole text of the Divine Messages from the beginning to the end committed to writing by the scribes of revelations.

b) Many of the Companions learned the whole text of the Quran, every syllable of it, by heart.

c) All the illustrious Companions, without an exception, had memorized at least some portions of the Holy Quran, for the simple reason that it was obligatory for them to recite it during worship. An estimate of the number of the illustrious Companions may be obtained from the fact that one hundred and forty thousands Companions had participated in the Last Pilgrimage performed by the Prophet (p).

d) A considerable number of the literate Companions kept a private record of the text of the Quran and satisfied themselves as to the purity of their record by reading it out to the

Methods of preservation of the Quran after the demise of the Prophet

It is an incontrovertible historical truth that the text of the Glorious Quran extant today is, syllable for syllable, exactly the same as the Prophet (p) had offered to the world as the Word of God.

After the demise of the Prophet(p), the first Caliph Abu Bakr, assembled all the Huffaz (those who have committed the Quran to memory), and the written records of the Glorious Quran and with their help had the whole text written in Book form. In the time of Uthman, copies of this original version were made and officially dispatched to the Capitals of the Islamic world. Two of the original manuscripts of the Quran prepared 1400 years ago still exist today; one is in the Topkapi Saray Museum in Istanbul, Turkey, and the other in Tashkent, Russia. Both of these are identical in content with the Quran available all over the world today.

And how can one expect any discrepancy, when there have existed several million “Huffaz” (someone who has memorized the entire Quran, word for word, cover to cover) in every generation since the time of the Holy Prophet (p) and in our own time. Should anyone alter a syllable of the original text of the Quran, these Huffaz would at once expose the mistake.

In the last century, an Institute of Munich University in Germany collected forty two thousand copies of the Glorious Quran including manuscripts and printed texts produced in each period in the various parts of the Islamic World. Research work was carried out on these texts for half a century, at the end of which the researchers concluded that apart from copying mistakes, there was no discrepancy in the text of these forty-two thousand copies, even though they belonged to the period between the 1st Century to the 14th Century of the Islamic era (roughly from the seventh to the twentieth century of the Common Era), and had been procured from all parts of the world. This institute, alas, perished in the bombing attacks on Germany during World War II, but the findings of its research project survived.

Another point that must be kept in view is that the word in which the Quran was revealed is a living language in our own time. It is still current as the mother tongue of about a hundred million people from Iraq to Morocco. In the non-Arab world too, hundreds of thousands of people study and teach this language.

The grammar of the Arabic language, its lexicon, its phonetic system and its phraseology, has remained intact for fourteen hundred years. A modern Arabic-speaking person can comprehend the Glorious Quran with as much proficiency as did the Arabs of fourteen centuries ago. This, then, is an important attribute of Prophet Muhammad (p). The Book that God revealed to him for the guidance of mankind exists today in its original language without the slightest alteration in its vocabulary.

(This is taken from part of a speech “Message of Prophet’s (p) Seerah”, given by Syed Abul A’ala Mawdudi. He compares the history and authenticity of three scriptures, Torah, Injeel and Quran.
